How to Buy Smarter with AI
Step 1: Describe What You Need
The more specific your prompt, the better the results:
- Describe what you want in plain English: "I need a portable Bluetooth speaker for outdoor use, under $60, with at least 10 hours battery life"
- Add constraints: budget, brand preferences, compatibility, delivery timeline
- Mention use case: "for camping trips" or "for a home office" changes recommendations dramatically
Step 2: Compare and Narrow Down
Once AI returns options, dig deeper:
- "Compare the top 3 — which has the best warranty?"
- "What do negative reviews say about the JBL Flip 6?"
- "Is there a newer model coming out soon?"
Step 3: Check Pricing
AI can help with timing:
- Search and compare: "Show me the best robot vacuum cleaners under $300"
- History check: "Has this item been cheaper in the last 90 days?"
- Price tracking: "Tell me when this drops below $200"
The Prompt Formula
Need + Budget + Constraints + Use Case = Perfect Product
"I need a laptop for college. Budget is $800 max. Needs to run Microsoft Office smoothly, have at least 8 hours battery, and weigh under 4 lbs. I'll mostly use it for notes, research papers, and light video editing."
What AI Can't Do (Yet)
- Try things on — physical fit still requires in-person or AR
- Guarantee lowest price — prices change in real time
- Replace hands-on testing — some products need a physical test (mattresses, chairs)
- Access all retailers — some stores don't expose pricing to AI
